The famous red blended wine “Codru,” named after the forest massif in central Moldova, is made from two of the most popular Bordeaux grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The “Codru” brand was created by specialists from the Scientific Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking in 1966.

Harvesting and Maturation

The grapes were harvested from plantations in southern Moldova once they reached a sugar content of no less than 18%. The wine material was prepared separately for each variety by fermenting the must on the skins with a floating cap. The wine was aged in oak barrels for 3 years in underground storage facilities located in the village of Mileștii Mici.

Organoleptic characteristics

The wine has a ruby color with a slight onion hue. The aroma is dominated by notes of wild bitter cherry, cherry jam, and plum marmalade, which develop in the glass into scents of soft leather and oriental spices. The taste is full-bodied, rich, with bright velvety tannins, ending in a long aftertaste of cherry pits and chocolate.

Serving recommendations

Before serving, it is recommended to decant the wine for 20 minutes to allow it to breathe and enrich with oxygen. Serving temperature should be +16 to +18 degrees Celsius. It pairs well with traditional Moldovan dishes, as well as lamb rack and veal medallions. The wine has a high potential for aging in a collection.
