The famous red blended wine “Codru,” named after the forest massif in the central part of Moldova, is created from the two most popular Bordeaux grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The “Codru” brand was established by specialists at the Scientific Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking in 1966.

Harvesting and Maturation

The grapes were harvested from the plantations in southern Moldova when they reached a sugar content of at least 18%. The must was prepared separately by grape variety through fermentation of the juice on the skins with a floating cap. The wine was aged in oak barrels in underground galleries located 80 meters deep in the village of Mileştii Mici.

Organoleptic characteristics

The wine has a dark ruby color. Its aroma features notes of dried cherries and prunes, complemented by hints of saffron, tobacco, and Eastern spices. The taste is rich, powerful, full-bodied, with pronounced tannins, finishing with a long aftertaste of plum jam and chocolate.

Serving recommendations

It is recommended to decant the wine for 30 minutes before serving to allow it to breathe and enrich itself with oxygen. Serve at a temperature of +16 to +18 degrees Celsius. It pairs well with meat dishes from Moldovan and Caucasian cuisine, such as polenta with tocana (a meat stew), pork shashlik, and oven-baked lamb rack. The wine has a high aging potential in the collection.
